🌹 Some Roads Take The Long Way Around

The Long Way Around

As this newsletter is landing in your email box, Michelle and I will be on our way to Colorado Springs for her high school reunion.

As we started making plans for the trip, I was reminded of something I've noticed more and more over the years, which is life rarely unfolds in a straight line.

The routes we imagine for ourselves. The careers, relationships, places, and plans we carefully map out, often end up taking unexpected detours. Some roads end abruptly. Others seem to disappear entirely before reappearing miles later in a place we never expected.

If you've spent any time in the Grateful Dead universe, you probably know what I mean.

A song you haven't heard in years suddenly shows up at exactly the right moment. A chance conversation turns into a lifelong friendship. Someone you met at a show decades ago crosses your path again. The music has a way of reminding us that there is more than one path forward, and that sometimes the scenic route has its own wisdom.

Lately I've been thinking about reunions...not just the official kind held in hotel ballrooms and school gymnasiums, but the quieter reunions that happen throughout our lives. Reconnecting with an old friend. Rediscovering a forgotten passion. Returning to a place that once felt like home. Finding your way back to a part of yourself that had been waiting patiently all along.

A few years ago, Michelle and I experienced one of those unexpected reunions ourselves. After decades of living separate lives, our paths crossed again, reminding me that some connections have a remarkable way of finding their way back when the time is right.

Those reunions don't always happen on our schedule.

Sometimes they arrive after years of wrong turns, delays, and unexpected challenges. Sometimes they show up disguised as coincidence. And sometimes they appear only after we've stopped looking for them altogether.

The Grateful Dead's story is filled with these unlikely intersections. Different musicians, artists, roadies, fans, and fellow travelers crossing paths at just the right moment, creating something far greater than any one person could have built alone. It's one of the reasons the music continues to resonate decades later. Beneath the songs is a reminder that our lives are connected in ways we often can't see until we look back.

As we head toward Colorado today, I'm grateful for those intersections. Grateful for the people, places, and moments that found their way into my life by routes I never could have planned.

And I'm grateful for this little community we've built here together.

However winding the road has been lately, I hope you're finding reasons to keep moving forward. There may be more waiting around the next bend than you realize.

Until next time, stay kind.

The Roads We Never Planned

If you've ever looked back on your life and wondered how you ended up where you are, you're not alone.

Most of us imagine our future as a straight line. We make plans, set goals, and chart a course toward the places we think we're supposed to go. But life has a habit of introducing unexpected turns.

A job opportunity appears out of nowhere. A move changes everything. A friendship deepens. A chance encounter opens a door we didn't know existed. Sometimes what feels like a detour becomes the very thing that shapes the journey.

The Grateful Dead understood this better than most.

The band's story wasn't built on a master plan. It grew from improvisation, curiosity, and a willingness to follow unexpected possibilities. Songs evolved from night to night. Setlists changed. New musicians joined the adventure. Entire chapters of the story emerged because someone simply said "yes" to the next opportunity and trusted the road to reveal itself.

Deadheads often describe the same experience. Many of us didn't discover the music through a carefully researched decision. We heard a song as a passenger in a friend's car, borrowed a tape from someone, wandered into a show, or stumbled across an album at just the right moment. One unexpected turn led to another, and before long we found ourselves part of a community that spans generations and continents.

Looking back, the moments that shape us most are often the ones we never could have planned.

The road bends. The scenery changes. We lose our bearings for a while. Then, years later, we realize those twists and turns weren't taking us away from our lives at all...they were quietly bringing us toward them.

This week, as reunions are on my mind, I'm reminded that not every path is meant to be straight. Some roads wander. Some disappear over the horizon before circling back. And sometimes, the most meaningful destinations are the ones we never set out to find.

Bob's Colorado Homecoming

As Michelle and I prepare for her high school reunion at Fountain Valley School, we couldn’t help but smile at a bit of Grateful Dead history connected to the same place.

Before the Grateful Dead, before the endless tours and songs that would become central to his life, Bob Weir spent part of his high school years at Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs. It was there that he met fellow student John Perry Barlow, who would later become one of the Grateful Dead’s lyricists and one of Bob’s lifelong friends.

Like many of us, Bob’s path wasn’t exactly conventional. School wasn’t always an easy fit, and his journey eventually led to a chance meeting with Jerry Garcia, helping launch one of the most enduring musical adventures in American history.

But Fountain Valley remained part of the story.

Decades later, during a Fountain Valley School reunion, Bob surprised alumni by showing up with a guitar and playing for the small crowd gathered in the courtyard.

There’s something fitting about that image: a musician whose life became defined by movement and life on the road returning to a place connected to his beginnings...not for a stadium crowd, but simply to reconnect with old memories and familiar faces.

We'll be thinking about that moment this weekend, and about the places that continue to shape us long after we’ve left them behind.

Sometimes the road takes us far away.

Sometimes it brings us home again.

Songs for the Road

Preparing for the weekend, these are the songs we’ve been reaching for...

Music filled with movement, resilience, sunshine, and the kind of joy that comes from reconnecting with old friends and familiar places.

Truckin'

Few songs capture the spirit of movement, detours, and unexpected adventures quite like Truckin’. Sometimes the long way around becomes the story itself.

Touch Of Grey

A reminder that life rarely unfolds perfectly, and that’s okay. Through all the twists, challenges, and uncertain seasons, there’s something deeply hopeful about gathering together and realizing we’re still here.

Sunshine Daydream

Pure summer energy. Open skies, warm light, old friends, music, and celebration. The perfect soundtrack for reunion weekend in Colorado (or wherever you may be!).

Whether you’re traveling across the country or simply revisiting old memories this week, we hope these songs bring a little light to the journey.

💧 A Ripple Moment Before We Go

The road has a funny way of bringing people back into our lives when we least expect it.

Maybe this week, you can help create one of those moments for someone else. Sometimes the smallest gestures, like a simple hello, an unexpected note, or a reminder that someone still matters can brighten a person’s entire day.

Reach out. Call. Knock on their door.

Reconnect with someone you have lost contact with, or simply let a friend know you’re thinking about them today.

You never know how much light a small moment of kindness might carry down the road.

More soon. Stay kind...
